Palindromes
Palindromes (2004)

IMDB rating: 6.90

Plot: A fable of innocence: thirteen-year-old Aviva Victor wants to be a ‘mom’. She does all she can to make this happen, and comes very close to succeeding, but in the end her plan is thwarted by her sensible parents. So she runs away, still determined to get pregnant one way or another, but instead finds herself lost in another world, a less sensible one, perhaps, but one pregnant itself with all sorts of strange possibility. She takes a road trip from the suburbs of New Jersey, through Ohio to the plains of Kansas and back. Like so many trips, this one is round-trip, and it’s hard to say in the end if she can ever be quite the same again, or if she can ever be anything but the same again.

Can someone help me with these math problems?
The sum of three consecutive squares in 770. What are the three square numbers?

At a dinner, every four guests shared a tray of appetizers, every three guests shared a tray of chicken and rice, and every two guests shared a tray of fruit and other desserts. In all, thirty-nine trays were served. How many guests were at this meal?

Martha told Phyllis that her phone number was a 3-digit palindrome followed by a 4-digit palindrome, and that each was a perfect cube. What is Martha’s phone number?

and can you please explain how to do these? please and thankyou

Three consecutive squares:
(x - 1)^2 + x^2 + (x + 1)^2 = 770
x^2 - 2x + 1 + x^2 + x^2 + 2x + 1 = 770
3x^2 + 2 = 770
3x^2 = 768
x^2 = 256
x = 16
15^2 + 16^2 + 17^2 = 225 + 256 + 289 = 770

Let g = number of guests
g/4 + g/3 + g/2 = 39
3g + 4g + 6g = 12*39
13g = 12 * 13 * 3
g = 36
9 appetizer trays
12 chicken and rice trays
18 dessert trays
Total: 39

Let’s calculate some cubes:
4^3 = 64 … to small
5^3 = 125 … 3 digits but not a palindrome
6^3 = 216
7^3 = 343 ! bingo
skipping ahead (no more 3-digit cube palindromes)
10^3 = 1000 (First 4-digit cube)
11^3 = 1331 (that’s a palindrome, we can stop here
(or check if there are any more but there aren’t)
The phone number is 343 - 1331

Man Who Would Be King, The
Man Who Would Be King, The (1975)

IMDB rating: 8.00

Plot: ” The Man Who Would Be King” is about two ambitious ex-soldiers stationed in India who set out to become the rulers of an entire country. After finishing their tour of duty in India, Daniel Dravot and Peachy Carnehan have decided that India is “too small for the likes of them,” so they decide to bribe a local ruler and extort money from him, in order to buy twenty Martini rifles, which they will use to take over villages in Kafristan. They face many challenges and perils along the way, including difficult terrain, hostile natives, freezing temperatures, and an avalanche high in the mountains. They eventually come to a small village, Urheb, where they meet Ootah and Billy Fish, an Indian who speaks English; he then becomes their translator. They then train the natives of this village to use the rifles, and soon conquer village after village. During a battle, Daniel is struck by an arrow that seemingly sticks out of his chest. The ignorant natives believe that he must be a God for not having died, and fall down and begin worshiping him. Daniel and Peachy decide that it would be easier for a “God ” to take over the country, so they pretend that Daniel is a god, the son of Alexander the Great who has returned after 2200 years to again rule Kafristan. The entire country celebrated the return of their new ruler, the Son of Segunda (”Alexander”). As a token of their admiration, the holiest of holy men gives Daniel all of the gold and riches left by Alexander in 328 B.C. It is enough to make them the richest men in the world . . . All goes well until Daniel’s ego and greed gets the best of him. He asks Peachy to bow when he walks in front of him. He later tells Peachy that he has decided to stay, and now believes that he is the son of Alexander ( ‘in spirit, anyways”), and that to fulfill his destiny, he will marry Roxanne, like his “father” Alexander did before him. The Kafiri’s believe that a mortal cannot marry a God, but Daniel goes ahead anyway. Peachy was set to leave with his share of the treasure, but Daniel convinced him to stay ” for old time’s sake” for the wedding. At the ceremony, Roxanne, believing that she would soon die, bites Daniel, drawing blood. The entire crowd realizes that since Danny is bleeding, that he is a man, not a God, and that he has been deceiving them the entire time. Peachy grabs Daniel and they run off with their twenty soldiers, shooting at the crowd of monks who set out to kill them. They are eventually captured, and Daniel is forced to walk out on a rope bridge. The monks cut the ropes, and Daniel bravely falls to his death. Peachy is later crucified; when they come to see him the next day, he is still alive, and they say that it is a miracle that he lived and they cut him down. He eventually climbs down into the valley and retrieves Danny’s head, still wearing the crown. He brings it back to Rudyard Kipling, a writer for the Northern Star, as proof that Daniel accomplished his goal, and became the King of Kafristan. Themes developed in the story: 1. ambition 2. friendship 3. taking risks 4. perseverance (not giving up) 5. power 6. honor and dignity

famous sagas from medieval times?
anyone know any?

and also was some norse (viking) mythology written in sagas or eddas?

The most famous of course are the tales of King Arthur, followed by the tales of Robin Hood.
Beowulf is the earliest.
There’s also the Nibelungenlied, the tale of Siegfried, that is known as Volsungasaga to the Norse people. (Their name for Siegfried was Sigurd.)
Additionally there’s The Song of Roland and the tale of Ogier the Dane
The Elder Edda and Prose Edda contain lots of Norse myth and legends.

Tales of King Arthur of England and The Tales of Robin Hood would be a modest start.

Baby’s Day Out (1994)

IMDB rating: 4.50

Plot: Baby Bink couldn’t ask for more; he has adoring (if somewhat sickly-sweet) parents, he lives in a huge mansion, and he’s just about to appear in the social pages of the paper. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is as nice as Baby Bink’s parents; especially the three enterprising kidnapers who pretend to be photographers from the newspaper. Successfully kidnaping Baby Bink, they have a harder time keeping hold of the rascal, who not only keeps one step ahead of them, but seems to be more than a little bit smarter than the three bumbling criminals.

I can't remember this 90's kids movie!?
The only thing i can recall is a little girl trying to escape from this ugly tall skinny woman with crazy red hair and crooked teeth. The woman was chasing after the girl, she didn’t want her to get away for some reason, in a swamp on a swamp boat, i think. The girl had help from something small, like mice, or something like that. Please help it’s driving me crazy ! The only thing i could think of was rescuers down under but i looked up images and there was no red haired woman…

The Rescuers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076618/) was made in 1977, there was a sequel The Rescuers Down Under (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100477/) that was made in 1990. The first is most likely the one you are thinking of, it was re-released twice once in 1983 and once in 1989.

Is Poseidon the Adventure named after the greek god?

Yes it was, Purdey is quite correct. The name of the movie was "The Poseidon Adventure", and see the original with Gene Hackman. Much better than the remake.

Technically no, it was the name of the ship in the movie, but the ship was named after the Greek god, and the film makers knew most people would make the connection. so indirectly yes.
